There are numerous choices of good diving wrist watch but all meet the minimium requirements of scuba divers, most diver nowadays dive with a dive computer device, and the dive wrist watch are being used more as a secondary system, but it will instill confidence and will become a life saving advice if the primary dive computer fails.

What criteria need to be taken into consideration when choosing your diving wrist watch? What functions they must have to serve all the needs of diving duties?

Criteria for a Diving Wrist Watch

Diving wrist watches need to be mechanical. The watch must be hermetically and firmly sealed body is a must for diving watches. The diving watch body must be made of high quality steel or pure titanium and should not be multi-pieces. TAG Heuer watches are excellent a good example because of their one body covering.

Generally, diving wrist watches have circular section thickening ring between their body and cover snap together with screwings. It should have considered side protection to protect from hammering and shock resistances.

Diving wrist watches that have the above features will generally provide water-resistant up to 100m. Most professional scuba diving watches can sustain much deeper water pressures, with some models of TAG Heuer and Sector watches you can dive up to 1000m. At deeps thereis less light than on the surface, so your wrist watch will need to have large and self glowing numbers, hands and markers that can easily be seen.

When underwater you can lose perception of time and for this you require a rotating bezel with markers to indicate your time under water. Enusre that your watch the bezel rotates anti-clockwise, so if you knock it you will only lose dive time and not over diving which can cause complications.

The founders discovered a unique illumination technology being produced by a Swiss manufacturer, and look at adding the technology to there line of Swiss watches for diving and negotiated an exclusive relationship for the use of the technology in North America, and the world’s most luminous timepiece collection was born.

The Richard and Barry later registered the name Luminox, which in Latin means “light night” to emphasize the superlative illumination system utilized in the watch collection. The company logo encompasses this meaning by using white lettering (light) on a black background (night) on a white background and red trim (color of the Swiss flag).

Sales for the Luminox were slow, as the market was saturated with big brand dive watches, until there break though with the U.S Navy Seals team who requested them to build a watch for diving for their seals with night missions capablility. Within nine months they had there first Luminox Navy Seal Dive Watch that was launched in 1994. From then on they were selling thousands of watches of the plastic watch. Later in 1999 they launched their first fully steel Navy Seal Dive Watch. Now luminox continued to expand there dive watch series with the addition of an all-steel series and an all-titanium series in the fall of 2000.

Micro gas lights installed into the hour markers and bezels of a variety of Luminox watches make them unique. No external lighting source is needed to charge the paint on the dial or hands, and they don't require the push of a button to light the dial. All Luminox watches are entirely Swiss-made with multi-jewel Swiss quartz watch movements.

For the active set looking for good value in a rugged, dependable and eye-catching timepiece, the search is over. Luminox watches, with a unique self-powered illumination system guaranteed for 10 years, exceed all expectations.

Most manufacturers recommend that the maintenance for your scuba diving watches is to be carried out annually or every two to three years depending on the scuba diving done. The diving watch pressure testing shold ecarried out by an authorised service and repair centre.

Most manufacturers recommend you rinse the scuba diving watch in fresh water after use in seawater. By leaving the scuba diving watch in freshwater over nite will protect the watch from corrosion and to keep the crown, buttons and pressure sensors on digital ones working. Divers also have to inspect their watch and wrist band for defects before every dive and especially in case it came into contact with gasoline or strong chemicals, powerful magnetic fields or was knocked something hard during use.

Watches for diving at extreme depths are available and they can be certified to more than 1,000m (3,281 ft). The diving depth record for off shore diving was achieved by a team of professional divers in 1988. They were performing pipe line connection exercises at a depth of 534 meters of seawater (MSW) (1752 ft) in the Mediterranean Sea. They were using watch for diving called were the Rolex Sea Dwellers that are the standard issue diving watch for every Comex diver since 1976.

In 1992 a Comex diver achieved a record of 701 MSW (2300 ft) not actual diving but in an on shore hyperbolic chamber. The watch for diving used during this scientific record dive, where a hydrogen-helium-oxygen gas mixture was used as breathing gas, was also a Rolex Sea Dweller what is ater resistance rating to 1220 meters (4000 ft). The high costs involved and the use of under water vehicles as reduced the need for watches for diving at extreme depth.

Some of the watches for diving extreme depths are filled with silicone oil exploiting the virtual incompressible of liquids. For example of diving watch by Sinn UX (EZM 2B) which case is certified for 12,000 meters, however, the quartz controlled movement can only withstand a depth of 5,000 meters. This technology only works with quartz movements as a mechanical movement does not work properly in the oil filled case. An advantage of this technology is that the time can be read very well under water.

Are you aware that special watches for diving ae required when scuba diving, due to the extreme pressures involved when underwater. Some watches are water resistant and other are divers watch even though both state a depth of 100mthere proformance is greatly different.

Thats why the ISO have issued a standard for all water resistant watches which also prohibits the term waterproof to be used with watches, which many countries have adopted.

Basic water resistance is achieved by gaskets which forms a watertight seal around the special diving watch, used in conjunction with a sealant applied on the case to help keep water out. The material of the case must also be tested in order to pass as water resistant.

Special watches for diving are used as the they need a high degree of water resistant to qualify a watch for scuba diving. Other such watches are designed for everyday life and must be water resistant during exercises such as swimming. They can be worn in different temperature and pressure conditions but are under no circumstances designed for scuba diving.

The standards for special scuba diving watches are regulated by the ISO 6425 international standard. The watches are tested in static or still water under 125% of the rated (water)pressure, hence a watch rated to 200m infact is ok to 250m of static water.

To pass the watch of as a scuba diving watch by ISO 6425 the following must be completed:

Immersion of the watch in 30 cm of water for 50 hours.

Immersion of the watch in water under 125% of the rated pressure with a force of 5 N perpendicular to the crown and pusher buttons (if any) for 10 minutes.

Immersion of the watch in 30 cm of water at the following temperatures for 5 minutes each, 40°C, 5°C and 40°C again, with the transition between temperatures not to exceed 1 minute. No evidence of water intrusion or condensation is allowed.

Immersion of the watch in a suitable pressure vessel and subjecting it to 125% of the rated pressure for 2 hours. The pressure must be applied within 1 minute. Subsequently the overpressure shall be reduced to 0.3 bar within 1 minute and maintained at this pressure for 1 hour. No evidence of water intrusion or condensation is allowed.

For mixed gas diving the watch has to be immersed in a suitable pressure vessel and subjecting it to 125% of the rated pressure for 15 days in a (helium enriched) breathing gas mix. Subsequently the overpressure shall be reduced to normal pressure within 3 minutes. No evidence of water intrusion, condensation or problems caused by internal overpressure are allowed.

An optional test originating from the ISO 2281 tests (but not required for obtaining ISO 6425 approval) is exposing the watch to an overpressure of 2 bar, no more than 50µg/min of air is allowed to get inside the case.

Except the thermal shock resistance test all further ISO 6425 testing should be conducted at 18 to 25°C temperature. The required 125% test pressure provides a safety margin against dynamic pressure increase events, water density variations (seawater is 2 to 5% denser than freshwater) and degradation of the seals.

Before we have discussed 5 features of a divers watch and now we will continue with some more features.

Pushers

Digital and some analog chronograph scuba diving watch - such as the Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chronograph, Doxa T-Graph, IWC Aquatimer Minute Memory, the Omega Seamaster Professional Chrono Diver series and Sinn U1000 - have specially-designed push pieces that can be operated at depth without allowing water to enter the case.

Helium release valve

Some scuba diving watches intended for saturation diving at great depths (typically greater than 100m) are fitted with a helium or mixed breathing gas release or escape valve to prevent the crystal from being blown off by a pressure build up caused by helium that has seeped into the watch in helium enriched environments as the watch and diver adjust to normal atmospheric conditions. Other helium safe/for mixed-gas rated diving watches can withstand the helium used in certain diving situations by using gaskets that simply do not allow helium gas to enter the watch case in a harmful way in the first place.

Legibility

The dials and markers on the scuba diving watch face and of course the bezel have to be legible under water and in low light conditions. An indication that the watch is running in total darkness also has to be present. For easy legibility most diving watches have high contrasting, none cluttered dials and markers with a large, easily identifiable minute hand. The markers for 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock on the scuba diving watch face and the zero marker on the bezel of analogue diver's watches are usually conspicuously styled to prevent disorientation induced read out errors. For low light conditions luminous phosphorescent non-toxic strontium aluminate based lume pigments marketed under brand names like Super-LumiNova or NoctiLumina and tritium based self-powered lighting devices called "gaseous tritium light source" (GTLS) is applied on the dials and markers. As for digital diving watches back lights are used for low light conditions legibility.

Power reserve indicator

A scuba diving watch with an electric battery powered movement must have an End Of Life (EOL) indicator, usually in the form of a jumping second hand or a warning message on a digital display to safeguard against insufficient power reserve during underwater activities. Some electric and mechanical powered movement diving models have power reserve indicators that show the current power status of the watch. Mechanical movements should be wound or in case of automatic movements given enough motion before a dive.

Crystal

Scuba Diving watches have relatively thick watch crystals face. Sometimes domed crystals are used to enhance the pressure resistance of the scuba diving watch. The typical materials used for crystals are acrylic glass, hardened glass and (synthetic) sapphire which all come with own pros and cons.

Acrylic glass is very break resistant but can easily be scratched but the small scratches can be buffed out with polishing compounds.

Hardened glass is more scratch resistant than acrylic glass and less brittle than sapphire.

Sapphire is very scratch resistant but less shatter proof than the other crystal options. Anti-reflective coatings are generally applied on sapphire crystals to enhance the legibility of the watch.

Some manufacturers use sapphire/hardened glass laminate crystals, where the scratch resistance sapphire is combined with the better shatter resistance of hardened glass.

When buying a divers watch there can be many features that are different between manufacturers, the list here are some of the features that you will find on a typical divers watch.

Watch Case

The watch cases of diving watches must be adequately water and pressure resistant to with stand the forces when there under water and be able to endure the corrosiveness of seawater, so the watch cases are typically made out of materials such as stainless steel, titanium, ceramics and synthetic resins or plastics. The case must also provide protection against external magnetic influences and shocks.

Elapsed time controller

Analog diviers watch will often feature a rotating bezel, which is used to read elapsed time from a specific point. This is used to compute the length of a dive. The bezel is used by turning until you can align the zero on the bezel with the watch's seconds or minute’s hand. As time elapses the reading can be read of the bezel. This will save the scuba diver from having to perform the subtraction that would be necessary if the watch's regular dial was used and the plus of having a bg dial to read when underwater. On a divers watch the bezel is "unidirectional", meaning the bezel can be turned in a single direction as turning it the wrong way can so not to increase the length of time under water. So the bezel can only move in a way that will give a shortened time underwater. Digital dive watches usually perform this function by use of a standard stop watch function. Digital dive watches may also feature a depth gauge and logging features.
Strap/bracelet

Generally a divers watch features a rubber, silicone rubber or polyurethane strap or a metal bracelet of adequate length to allow the waering of awet or dry suit. For this bracelets often have a (concealed) Divers extension deployment clasp by which the bracelet can be appropriately extended.

Bezel Markings

Most contemporary dive watches with conspicuous 15 or 20 minute markings on their bezels, are the result of copying a Rolex bezel design back from the 1950s. Back then divers typically planned a dive to a certain maximum depth based on US Navy dive tables, and dove according to the planned dive profile.

Crown

The typical analog divers watch must have a water resistant crown else it would flood. Often the crown has to be unscrewed to make any adjustments to the time and date and afterwards retightened to restore the water resistance of the watch. There are however models that have crowns that are operated like the crowns of non diver's analog watches. Screw down locking crowns and traditionally operated water resistant crowns can not be operated under water.
